Chinese journalists are facing deportation out of the U.S. after the hotly contested presidential election on Tuesday, November 3rd. The state department on Monday standing by a new and very controversial legal process. This process the Trump administration imposed earlier this year.
Chinese Journalists are Facing Political Persecution, Suppression
The Chinese state media said on Monday that attacking new visa regulations. This will force some of its citizens to operate as journalists in the U.S. to stop work on Wednesday. In turn, they will face deportation. It’s being rightly seen as “political persecution and suppression against Chinese reporters.”
New Visa Limitations the Department of Homeland Security
The hot-button issue comes from new visa limitations from the Department of Homeland Security. It took place last spring regarding all foreign journalists. But it is specifically put harsh restrictions on Chinese reporters. They are only allowing one 90-day visa with the possibility of one extension for another 90 days.
Chinese Journalists on Notice
As of last week, Chinese reporters were notified they got their visa extensions. Yet they were only valid until November 4th. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters on Monday. They will not be able to work in the U.S. after that date until they receive confirmation of another extension.
China will Take Reciprocal Action Against American Journalists
China would take reciprocal action against American journalists opening in China. That if the U.S. government did not change its course, Wang warned. However, Beijing since March has expelled all but a little more than a dozen American journalists. Because they did not respond to demands for more detailed information about their operations.
State Department Goes on the Defensive
Defending the situation as “routine and lawful”, the State Department made a statement to U.S. News on Monday, blasted China’s threats earlier in the day as “just another example of the [People’s Republic of China’s] attempt to legitimize its bullying and suppress a truly free press in China.”
