Be Mindful of Winter Clothing in Car Seats
For parents, winter clothing can impact the effectiveness of car seats. Bulky jackets and layered clothing can prevent a car seat harness from fitting properly, leaving a gap between the child and the seat that could be dangerous in the event of an accident. To ensure the child is properly secured, remove heavy winter clothes or coats when placing them in their car seat. Instead, go for snug-fitting clothing underneath the harness to ensure the seat is tight and secure.
Monitor Your Tire Pressure
As the temperature drops, so does the pressure in your tires. If your tire pressure warning light comes on, do not panic as it is likely just a result of the cold weather. Before assuming you have a flat tire, try to stop by a gas station, tire shop, or auto center to inflate your tires to the proper level. Cold weather can cause significant drops in tire pressure, so it is important to check your tires regularly, especially during the winter months. In addition to maintaining proper tire pressure, inspect your tires for signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, cuts, or bulges. Check the tread depth as well, ensuring it’s at least 2/32 of an inch or more to maintain safe traction on slippery roads.
Invest in Proper Floor Mats
During winter, snow, slush, and water can easily make their way into your car, causing slippery conditions inside. To protect yourself, consider switching to thicker rubber floor mats. These mats are more effective at trapping moisture and dirt, preventing it from affecting your ability to operate the brake and accelerator pedals. Make sure the mats you choose are the correct size for your vehicle and properly installed, as ill-fitting mats can interfere with your ability to drive safely.
Check Road Conditions Before You Go
Before heading out, always check road conditions, especially if it has recently snowed or rained. Snow and ice on the roads can lead to black ice, making it incredibly dangerous to drive. Even a short trip to the store can become hazardous if road conditions are poor. Additionally, winter weather can cause road closures, which may affect your route.
