Scorching hot weather is set for Southern California as the week comes to an end, as heat warnings are issued to cities all the way from the coast to further inland. According to reports from meteorologists, temperatures are expected to get into the triple digits, sitting in the 100s to 110s in many cities in the state over the weekend. The heatwave is expected to officially hit on Friday and last through to next Wednesday, July 24.
The hardest hit cities lie in the valleys, mountains, and foothill regions of Southern California. This means cities in the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, Ventura County Valleys, Antelope Valley, Santa Monica Mountains, and the San Gabriel Mountains. Heat warnings have gone out to all of these areas, which means people are on high risk alert for heat-related illnesses. Here are our tips to stay safe and healthy in this summer heatwave.
Stay Hydrated
It is an oldie but a goodie nonetheless! The hotter it is, the more you sweat, and the more you sweat, the more water you lose from your body. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to replenish the lost hydration. Also, remember that your body needs more than just water to be properly hydrated. Drink electrolytes to allow your body to properly absorb the water that you drink.
Stay Indoors As Much as Possible
As much as possible, we suggest staying indoors this weekend in air conditioning. If you do not have air conditioning available, we suggest finding places in your community that allow you to stay for a while at least. We suggest looking into cafes, dinners, and libraries. If you cannot stay indoors, try to limit outdoor physical activity. Stay in shaded areas as much as possible as well.
Remember to Look After Your Animals Too
Pets feel the heat just as much as we do, sometimes more so depending on their fur. Be sure to look after them as much as you look after people. Give them plenty of water and keep them indoors as much as possible as well.
Lastly, in all people and furry friends, look out for signs of heat-related illnesses such as nausea and dizziness. Seek medical attention right away if necessary.
